 Christmas Island, 1958/59.

There are some photos of my time as an RASC DUKW driver on Christmas Island during the British Nuclear Tests in the fifties in this web-site -
http://www.omnibusologist.com/military.html and, here is a BBC London article about a small reunion of some of us (including RASC petroleum fitters) who shared a tent on the island
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/arti....d_feature.shtml

Two or three years previously, all six out of the seven (one had died) from the tent met up at The Union Jack Club for our first reunion. Some of us had seen each other for nearly fifty years. Those involved were, Ray Chimes, Barry Hands, Bob (Spud) Murphy, Jim Thompson, John Treherne and myself, Brian Cole. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who think they know us and I have contact details for all of us should anyone be interested.

It's a little late in the day to reply to the original question, I know - but, I've only just been introduced to the web-site. Anyway, you may be interested to know that the RASC DUKWs at Christmas Island between 1958 and 1959 were usually painted in red lead. However, at one time, a rather crafty Royal Navy storeman (we were attached to the RN) managed to persuade our new CO - who I won't name for fear of embarrassing him - to purchase some dark blue paint he didn't need. DARK BLUE in the South Pacific - can you believe it! The DUWKs were virtually invisible at sea. Fortunately, however, we managed to get hold of some white paint which we used to paint the uppermost side-panel of the DUWKs. The upshot of that was that they looked like Birkenhead Corporation buses - but, at least, we could be seen from the shore. As soon as the blue paint was used we returned to the red lead.

Hi All,
Just registered on the forum. Did not know it existed and looks as if it is not used very much!

I was at Fremington from 1968 till 1971 which took in the tour of duty with the UN in Cyprus. I was a fairly unremarkable soldier and did not make many marks during my time there. I enjoyed it, great guys, nice area and Devon folks were lovely.

Hope people will make more use of this forum. Its a great way of keeping in touch. I will have to paratice what i preach, I'm not great at it myself.

Hi the DUKW is now finished, we have decided to leave it in an unmarked scheme as it would have left Henleys in 1956, its first outing will be at the Weston super mare Hellidays event on the sea front, I would look forward to speaking to any ex Dukw drivers or crew who will be in the area

Hi Mike, I saw Ken in Faversham & gave him your Tel number, glad he got in touch with you. A lot of the members may remember him as he was a good runner, he used to run down from the camp site at Staden hieghts to the beach and back as a bet for a couple of Woodbines, he's quite a character & doesn't appear to have changed much, just a little older, like the rest of us. I will try to see Bob Rand today as I'm going over that way, I don't know if he's contacted you yet. John Michael

Its been a long time since I left a note. Well I received a telephone call today from Ken Kirk who lives in Faversham. Just down the road from my location. We never served together but hey! we were DUKW drivers in a great camp "Fremington". Watch the ste because I shall take a quick snap. The contactys are slow but since the last reunion I have made contact with another 14 lads from 18 Coy/Sqn. The next reunion will be a great number. (150 plus) Mike (AMPH)
